Canadian fire alarm training, built by someone who does the work
Fire Alarm Academy exists because the fire alarm training an electrician in Canada actually needs is almost impossible to find.
Why this exists
Fire alarm is one of the few parts of electrical work that most electricians never get taught properly. Apprenticeship gives it a handful of hours. The standards themselves cost hundreds of dollars and read like legislation. And the moment you search for an explanation online, you land on American material.
That last part is the real problem. Most of the fire alarm content on the internet is written against NFPA 72. NFPA 72 is not part of the Canadian requirement chain. It is not what your inspector is holding, it is not what your drawings are stamped against, and following it will not make a Canadian install compliant. An electrician who learns fire alarm from American sources learns a system that does not apply to the building in front of them.
What Canadian actually means here
Everything we teach traces back to the documents that govern the work in this country. Installation is governed by CAN/ULC-S524. Verification is governed by CAN/ULC-S537. Periodic inspection and testing is governed by CAN/ULC-S536. Integrated testing of life safety systems is governed by CAN/ULC-S1001. Wiring methods come from Section 32 of the Canadian Electrical Code. Where a building is required to have a system in the first place, that requirement comes from the Ontario Building Code or the National Building Code — not from a standard.
We teach the chain in that order, because that is how the requirement actually flows: the building code tells you a system is required and to which standard, the standard tells you how to install and verify it, and the electrical code tells you how to wire it. Once that structure is clear, most of the confusion around fire alarm disappears.
Who teaches it
The course is taught by a licensed Ontario 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician who works on fire alarm systems for a living — installs, alterations, pre-commissioning, and the troubleshooting that happens when a panel will not clear. Not a full-time instructor who occasionally visits a jobsite. Someone who was on the wrong side of the knowledge gap, worked his way across it, and built the explanation he wanted on day one.
That shapes what is in the course and what is left out. There are no theory-only slideshows and no material that exists to pad a runtime. If it will not change what you do on a job or in front of an inspector, it is not in there.
Our editorial standard
The free guides are held to a rule that most trade content on the internet does not follow: every guide lists its sources, and we cite the specific code article or standard clause so you can go read the original yourself. We would rather you check us than trust us.
And if a fact can only be sourced to an American page — an NFPA article, a US manufacturer bulletin written to US requirements, a forum thread about US practice — we do not publish it. Not with a caveat, not "for reference." It comes out. There is enough American fire alarm information in Canadian search results already; adding to it does not help anyone holding a Canadian codebook.
Standards also change. Ontario currently adopts specific editions of the ULC standards, and those adoptions get updated. Where an edition matters, we say which edition, and we tell you to work from whichever one your authority having jurisdiction has adopted.
What this is not
Fire Alarm Academy is an educational course. It is not a certification, not a licence, not accredited, and not preparation for any certification exam. In Ontario, fire alarm testing, inspection and alteration work requires a program or course acceptable to the Fire Marshal under Article 1.2.1.2 of Division C of the Ontario Fire Code — currently only CFAA and ECAO Certi-Fire qualify. We are not one of them, and we will never imply otherwise. What this course gives you is understanding: the ability to read the code, wire the system, and know why it is built the way it is.
