How to Become a Fire Alarm Technician in Ontario (2026)
There is no fire alarm technician trade in Ontario — it is not one of Skilled Trades Ontario's 144 trades. But that does not mean the work is unregulated. Two separate legal requirements apply: the electrical installation work needs a 309A, because electrician is a compulsory trade; and annual testing, inspection, repair or alteration of a fire alarm system requires a program or course acceptable to the Fire Marshal under Division C of the Ontario Fire Code. The regulation names no program itself — the Fire Marshal's published list currently holds two, CFAA and ECAO Certi-Fire. Most people get there by becoming an electrician first, because a Canadian electrician's licence may exempt you from three of CFAA's five courses.

Start here: the thing nobody tells you
If you search "how to become a fire alarm technician in Ontario," you will find college program pages and a government job description. What you will not find is anyone saying the quiet part:
The job title has no legal existence in Ontario.
Skilled Trades Ontario administers 144 trades. Fire alarm technician is not one of them. (Skilled Trades Ontario)
The compulsory trades list has 22 entries. The only fire-adjacent one is Sprinkler and Fire Protection Installer. There is no fire alarm trade on it. (Compulsory trades list)
So there is no apprenticeship to enter, no certificate of qualification to earn, and no red seal. That sounds like bad news. It isn't — it just means the path is different from what you might expect, and understanding the actual structure saves you years and thousands of dollars.
Here is what actually exists:
A compulsory electrical trade. Installing fire alarm wiring and devices is electrical work. In Ontario, electrician is compulsory: "to practice this trade legally in Ontario a person must hold a Registered Training Agreement, Provisional Certificate of Qualification or Certificate of Qualification." (Skilled Trades Ontario) The 309A scope of practice expressly includes fire alarm and building systems.
A Fire Code qualification requirement. This is the part most guides get wrong. Ontario Fire Code, Division C, Article 1.2.1.2.(1)(a) requires that anyone performing annual tests or inspections, or repairing, replacing or altering fire alarm system components, "must have successfully completed a program or course acceptable to the Fire Marshal." The regulation names no program itself; the Fire Marshal's published list currently holds two: the CFAA Fire Alarm Technician Training Program and the ECAO Certi-Fire program. So CFAA is not merely "what employers like to see." For Fire Code work in Ontario it is one of two programs currently accepted by the Fire Marshal.
A standard for the new-build side. New construction is governed by the Building Code, which changed on 1 January 2025: O. Reg. 332/12 was revoked and O. Reg. 163/24 now adopts NBC 2020 as amended by the Ontario Amendments. Building Code Article 3.2.4.5 requires fire alarm systems to be installed to CAN/ULC-S524:2019 and verified to CAN/ULC-S537:2019 (Division B Table 1.3.1.2). The Building Code was replaced on 1 January 2025 — O. Reg. 332/12 revoked, O. Reg. 163/24 in force — but the article number carried over. What changed is the editions, up from S524-14 and S537-13. Either way the Building Code names the standard, not the person — but the moment a system is in service and someone alters it, the Fire Code qualification requirement above applies. Route 1 — Become an electrician first (the one most people should take)
Best for: anyone starting from scratch, or already in an electrical apprenticeship.
Step 1 — Get your 309A
Register an apprenticeship as an Electrician — Construction and Maintenance (309A). This is the standard Ontario electrical apprenticeship: a Registered Training Agreement with an employer, on-the-job hours, in-school terms, and a certifying exam.
This is a multi-year commitment, and it is the long part of the route. It is also the part that pays you while you do it, and it leaves you with a compulsory-trade certificate that has value entirely independent of fire alarm work.
Step 2 — Learn fire alarm systems
Here is the gap nobody plans for: your apprenticeship will barely touch fire alarm.
You will come out able to bend pipe, pull wire, terminate, and read the electrical code. You will not come out understanding how a fire alarm system is architected, why devices are placed where they are, what a verification actually involves, or how to read a fire alarm matrix on a set of drawings.
That gap is why most electricians avoid fire alarm work — and why the ones who close it get paid to do what the others walked away from.
You can close it three ways: learn it on site from someone who already knows (slow, and depends entirely on who you happen to work for), buy the standards and work through them (expensive and dry — S524:2024 alone is USD $352), or take a course.
Step 3 — Claim your CFAA exemptions
This is where the electrician route pays off, and almost nobody publishes it clearly.
If you are a licensed electrician in Canada, you may be exempt from CFAA Fire Alarm Technician Training program courses 2, 3, and 4.

Step 4 — Complete the remaining courses and both exams
Course 1, Course 5, the proctored theory exam and the hands-on practical.
Route 2 — Go straight to CFAA
Best for: people already working in fire protection or life safety who don't intend to become electricians.
There are no prerequisites to enter the CFAA program. You can register and start.

- Then the theory and practical exams
What this route does not give you: the ability to legally perform electrical installation work. That requires a 309A. You can learn the systems, get registered, and do inspection and testing work — but you cannot pull the wire.
About the "1,500 hours"
You will read that you need 1,500 hours of experience before you can register. That overstates it. CFAA's own page says:
We recommend 1500 hours of related work experience and/or trainig

Its storefront uses the same language: "The program recommends a minimum of 1,500 hours." It is a readiness recommendation, not a gate.
Route 3 — A college program
Best for: people who want structure, an instructor, and a classroom.
CFAA delivers its program through accredited education partners as well as directly. Confirmed partners include:

One thing worth understanding, from George Brown's own page: "The requirements are set by the CFAA (Canadian Fire Alarm Association), not George Brown Polytechnic." Where you take the courses does not change what CFAA requires. You are buying instruction and structure, not a different credential — and college delivery typically costs more than CFAA's own self-paced option.

The practical tests skills related to inspection, testing and maintenance. According to CFAA accredited partner HSM College it is open book — you are given the ULC S537-19 standard, spec sheets and operational manuals — and consists of performing a complete verification on a small but complete conventional system. Retake policy on the practical, same source: fail once, wait a minimum of one month. Fail twice, complete a CFAA Fire Alarm Trainee Log Book and wait at least a year before a third attempt.
One thing that catches people out: getting a course exemption removes the tuition, not the examination. The theory exam covers the program and requires 80% regardless of what you were exempted from.
Staying registered
Registration is renewed annually or every two years, with continuing education required.
A 2023 CFAA document gives annual registration at $80 + tax, two-year at $135 + tax, and continuing education at eight credits per year or sixteen every two years. (CFAA Technician Registration Process, 2023)

Verification is a separate question. Division C 1.2.1.2 covers annual testing, inspection and alteration — not S537 verification, which the Fire Code touches only at 9.9.4.12.(2) for hotel retrofits. No Ontario provision names a qualification for performing a verification, so that one is an AHJ determination.
The distinction most articles get wrong: being a licensed electrician does not satisfy the Fire Code's qualification requirement for testing, inspection or alteration work. Holding CFAA registration does not authorise you to do electrical installation work. Two separate legal tracks that overlap in the field — and doing the full job on an existing system can require both.
What about pay?
We are not going to publish a salary figure we cannot source.

What we can say from the structure of the trade: fire alarm work commands a premium because the supply of people who understand it is small, and the supply is small because the training barely exists. Every commercial building in Canada has a system that needs installing, verifying and testing. Most electricians hand that work to somebody else.

The CAN/ULC standards are national. The licensing regimes are not.

Note Alberta explicitly recognises the journeyman electrician route. Ontario does not — its Fire Code qualification is a Fire Marshal-accepted program, and a 309A alone does not satisfy it.
The honest summary
There is no fire alarm technician trade in Ontario, so there is no single path. What there is:
- Get your 309A if you want to do the installation work legally. It's compulsory and there's no way around it.
- Learn the systems. Nobody is going to teach you this in school, and it's the actual bottleneck.
- Get CFAA or Certi-Fire registered if you want to do annual testing, inspection or alteration work — that is what Fire Code Division C requires. Verification is separate, with no named Ontario qualification; ask the AHJ. Your electrician's licence may knock three courses and about $1,244 off it.
Step 2 is the one people underestimate. Steps 1 and 3 are processes with defined requirements and defined costs. Step 2 is the part where most electricians quietly give up and decide fire alarm is somebody else's problem.

If you are already a licensed electrician: claim the exemptions and complete Courses 1 and 5 plus both exams. If you are starting from zero and only want inspection and testing work, going straight into the CFAA program is faster than an apprenticeship.
Does an Ontario qualification work in other provinces?
Not necessarily. The standards are national; the licensing is provincial. Quebec requires an RBQ licence, 24 BC municipalities require ASTTBC registration by bylaw, and Alberta names the qualified person in its interpretations.

Canada splits fire alarm work across four separate standards where the American system uses one. S524 governs installation. S537 governs verification — a one-time event that proves the install matches the design. S536 governs periodic inspection and testing, forever after. S1001 governs integrated testing, where the fire alarm has to talk to other building systems. Confusing verification with inspection is the most expensive mistake in Canadian fire alarm work, and it happens constantly.
